Near Tehri lake, in the Garhwal region of Uttrakhand, exits this serene beauty called Sursingdhar that not many know about. Basking in its natural beauty, it sits high at 6000 feet and from here it overlooks the Tehri Lake and the famous Nanda Devi peak. Honestly, I had not heard about this place until a friend suggested it, though she had not visited it herself. Believe me or not the pictures on the internet were enough to convince us that we were doing it soon and together. And within a month of our discussion, we were actually there sipping our coffees in the balcony of our beautiful cottage and looking over the panoramic view of the Himalayas.

Reaching there is easy!

300 kilometer from Delhi and less than a hundred from Hardwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun, this one needs no month long planning from Delhi except that you must finalize on the suitable weekend for the getaway and book one of the cottages there. We stayed at Himalayan Eco Lodges & Camps and this one was a packed house in the month of July. From Delhi, we took an overnight bus to Dehradun and hired a cab as it was the most convenient way to reach Sursinghdhar. This hilly ascend was a delight and the quaint valleys, little hill towns and stunning views kept us enchanted till we reached the camp site.

Not a minute it took to declare that we were somewhere close to heaven. Nestled in the foothills of Garhwal Himalayas this one made for a perfect holiday. With untouched and virgin beauty, Sursingshar is a hidden gem of Uttarakhand. You need no laptops, no phone-calls and no stress of the city life. Every sight makes for a stunning landscape here. The beautiful flowers in the cottage and the pristine surroundings filled our heart with joy. The mountains breeze caressed my cheeks and I only wanted to lie down lazily. Far from the maddening crowd of the city, the gorgeousness of this beautiful place had that intoxicating effect on me that I am yet to get over with.

We did the offbeat in this offbeat location

In the cushy seats of your closed office in the city, you may have contemplated to go to a place where you could just sit under the sky and stare at the stars. Well, Sursingdhar is one of the places where you would love to do just it or may be nothing. Perched on the balcony chairs, I would love to hold a big cup of tea and simply gaze at the beauty around while my friend would read her book. After hearty breakfast, we would sit and chit-chat for long. When we were not strolling around and clicking pictures, we would enjoy playing board games and talking to other people in the lodge. Dancing around the bonfire in the night was fun too.

In the evening of the first day, we went for a 5 kilometers trek and returned as satisfied adventurers. On the way we met the locals, clicked their mud houses, played with the mountain goats, crisscrossed the mountain trails, prayed at the Sura temple and stopped at the sunset point. On the second day, we hired a cab and went to check out the Tehri dam and place where Old Tehri village used to be.

What you must do when there:

  • Don’t miss on the glimpse of beautiful sunrise and sunset in the mountains.
  • Go for a nature walk. We did a 5 kilometer trek here!
  • Pick your camera and just go clicking.
  • You must laze around, step out of the cottage, talk to local people and eat fruits from the trees.
  • Do visit the Tehri dam and the nearby small towns.
  • A drive to Kanatal and Dhanaulti is possible too.
  • If you have not been to Rishikesh and Haridwar, you should look forward to plan to cover these places as well.

So now when the monsoons is almost over, September is the perfect month to be in the hills. There will be clear skies and not much chill in the air. So, pack your bags and get going!
