Itinerary

  • Day 01: Chandigarh – Manali.

    An early morning start will help you to reach your destination in the afternoon. You will be staying in a luxurious hotel, Hotel Iceland / Solang Valley or equivalent. The Valley is famous for Adventure sports like trekking skiing paragliding rafting. With lush green mountains around, it is a perfect place to relax.

    Drive detail: 310 KM of Mix drive, plain and moderate hill.

    Drive time: 8 to 9 hours.

    Day 02: Manali – Jispa.

    From Manali you will leave early and try to witness the sunrise at Rohtang Pass. The mighty Rohtang pass has it all. The greenery, the snow, the water. At the height of 13050 ft, it’s a high mountain pass on the eastern Pir Panjal Range. It’s a comparatively short drive to Jispa, a village in Lahaul region of Himachal at the bank of Bhaga River. With ample time to relax, it is a perfect destination for break before a long drive to Leh crossing 4 passes including the Tanglang La. Your overnight halt is scheduled at Hotel Ibex or equivalent. 

    Drive detail: 140 KM of Mix drive, Hill drive.

    Drive time: 5 to 6 hours.

    Day 03: Jispa – Leh.

    It’s a long drive, crossing 4 passes including Baralacha La and Tanglang La. A 40 KM stretch of More Plains is a delight to drive.  The highest pass on the way is Tanglang La at the height of 17480 ft. After a tiring day your luxury hotel, Hotel Saboo / Hotel La Chen or equivalent is waiting to pamper you.

    Drive detail: 335 KM of mix drive, mostly hill drive.

    Drive time: 10 to 12 hours.

    Day 04: Leh and around.

    After almost 800 KM of drive, it’s a day for rest. A visit to Thiksey, Hemis or Lamayuru Monastery along with a beautiful evening in Leh is ideal.   

    Drive detail: 50 KM Maximum. All plain drive.

    Day 05 - Leh – Nubra.

    Today you will be crossing Khardung La at the height of 18380 ft. It’s a gateway to Siachen. Nubra Valley is a must visit place specially if you are traveling to Leh for the first time. Overnight stay will be at Desert Himalaya or equivalent.

    Drive detail: 140 KM. Hill drive.

    Drive time: 5 to 6 hours.

    Day 06: Nubra Valley and around.

    One more day in Nubra Valley just to witness the mesmerizing beauty of the place. Diskit Monetary is the oldest and largest Buddhist Monetary in the Nubra Valley. It is also famous for the 32 metre statue of Maitreya Buddha. Evening is free to do shopping and sightseeing.

    Drive detail: 50 KM Maximum. Mostly Plain.

    Day 07: Nubra – Leh.

    The road journey from Nubra valley leads through the world highest motorable road, Khardongla Pass which is at a hight of 18380 ft above sea level and around 50 kms from Leh. After crossing the pass, you can have a view of Khardong village, Khalser and Deskit .

    Drive detail: 140 KM. Hill drive.

    Drive time: 5 to 6 hours.

    Day 08: Leh – Pangong.

    Pangong Tso situated at the height of 14270 ft. It’s a 134 KM long lake and around 60% of it falls in China. The lake is 5 KM wide at its broadest point. The road to Pangong is mostly rough and dramatic. The road crosses the villages of Shey and Gya and traverses the Changla Pass at the height of 17590 ft.

    Drive detail: 175 KM Maximum. Hill drive.

    Drive time: 6 to 7 hours.

    Day 09: Pangong – Leh.

    On day nine you will return from Pangong Tso to Leh. Evenings are free to do shopping and sightseeing

    Drive time: 6 to 7 hours.

    Day 10: Leh – Manali.

    A long day indeed – as you cover a lot of ground today. You will be taking Leh-Manali highway and try reaching Sarchu by evening via Rohtang Pass. The moment you left Sarchu grass-covered mountain slopes with the numerous tiny purple, pink and yellow flowers mixing magically with the green gives you company all along. By the evening you will reach Manali and relax in your hotel rooms.

    Drive detail: 475 KM. Mostly Hill.

    Drive time: 11 to 12 hours.

    Day 11: Manali – Chandigarh.

    It’s your last day of this exuberant road trip. After breakfast, with lots of thrilling memories and new found friendships you leave for Chandigarh.

    Drive detail: 310 KM of Mix drive, plain and moderate hill.

    Drive time: 8 to 9 hours.

Tips, Hints, Precautions

  • 1. Is this a self drive expedition?

  • Yes this is an exlcusive self drive expedition where you will be a part of the convoy and will follow the lead car. This event is open for both Bike and Car categories.

  • 2. What if I do not have my own vehicle?

  • Explore India By Road can arrange a rented vehicle (Mahindra Thar 4x4 INR 7,000/-, Rally Prepared Gypsy INR 7,000/- & Thunderbird 500cc INR 1,500/- depending on your preference) for you. However, any breakage will have to be bourne by you.

  • 3. What preparations do I need to make in my vehicle before I decide to sign up for Himalayan Getaway 2015?

  • Make sure that your vehicle is properly serviced. As for tyres, get aligned and balance by an authorized service station. If they are worn, change them before the trip, as the rough road conditions can shred worn tyres. The whole point of the driving holiday is to enjoy the drive. Take frequent breaks, enjoy the scenery and keep yourself hydrated. It will be a holiday of a lifetime.

  • 4. Do we get High Altitude Sickness in Leh? What are the symptoms and how we get acclimatize?

  • On roadtrips to Leh and Ladakh, body get enough time to acclimatize because of gradual ascend. However, Acute Mountain Sickness or AMS can strike anyone. The most common symptoms of AMS are lack of sleep, loss of appetite, dizziness, irregular breathing, etc. It is highly recommended to consult your doctor and take preventive medicines before embarking on this journey.

  • We would recommend you to consult your general physician on this.

  • 6. What if my vehicle get stuck in Leh?

  • We will be traveling well prepared with all required tools, pick up van and flat bed trailer to pull any vehicle which gets stuck.

  • Yes, children are allowed on this trip. However, separate charges are mentioned for the different age groups:
