Tips, Hints, Precautions

  • 1. I’m not flexible, can I do yoga?

  • Yes! You are a perfect candidate for yoga. Many people think that they need to be flexible to begin yoga, but that’s a little bit like thinking that you need to be able to play tennis in order to take tennis lessons. Come as you are and you will find that yoga practice will help you become more flexible. This newfound agility will be balanced by strength, coordination, and enhanced cardiovascular health, as well as a sense of physical confidence and overall well-being.

  • 2. Do I have to be vegetarian to practice yoga?

  • The first principle of yoga philosophy is ahimsa, which means non harming to self and others. Some people interpret this to include not eating animal products. There is debate about this in the yoga community—I believe that it is a personal decision that everyone has to make for themselves. If you are considering becoming a vegetarian, be sure to take into account your personal health issues as well how your choices will affect those with whom you live. Being a vegetarian should not be something that you impose on others—that kind of aggressive action in itself is not an expression of ahimsa.

  • 3. How should I get from Airport to SWAN Yoga Retreat?

  • Airport transfers to SWAN Yoga Retreat can be arranged for the cost Rs. 1500 (from 07:00 to 20:00) or Rs. 1700 (from 20:00-07:00) each way. If you choose to be picked up from the airport SWAN Yoga Retreat would like to have your arrival details ideally 2 days before the arrival.

  • 4. What will be the level of accommodation?

  • Budget Cottage.

  • Budget only in price, not in luxury, this long cottage is divided up into separate row rooms. Each with individual outdoor entrances and adjoined private bathrooms, it's the perfect accommodation for 1-2 budget travellers. Every room is named after the four brothers of Raymana - an Indian mythological scripture - and features two twin beds with mosquito netting, a ceiling fan and a large curtained window to filter in natural light and the cool mountain breeze. You can also enjoy the rush of cool air with the company of your neighbouring guests from the communal covered patio, equipped with outdoor seating by every room entrance.

  • Standard Cottage.

  • Accommodating 2-4 guests, these spacious private east facing cottages provide a beautiful view of the sunrise over the jungle trees. Named after the seven chakras each cottage features two double beds with mosquito netting, ceiling fans above each bed, a private adjoined bathroom, two curtained windows for maximum air circulation, and a covered private patio with a lounge area. Built close enough to each other to talk to your neighbour, yet far enough away to maintain your privacy, it's easy to taller you level of engagement with other guests to your liking.

  • Deluxe Cottage.

  • Sitting at the top of the hill, our deluxe cottages give you the best view and most privacy. Perfect for couples or someone looking to treat themselves, each cottage features a king bed with mosquito net, large adjoined private bathroom, a writing desk, two ceiling fans, curtained windows, and private covered patio with lounge seating from where you can take enjoy a panoramic view of the jungle, the best sunrise, and feel the full force of the cooling mountain breeze. Being on the sixth tier of the property, its placement is metaphorically aligned with the sixth and highest level of enlightenment, so you could say waking up there is like waking up in heaven.

  • 5. What are the things one should carry?

  • Most of these items can be purchased locally in Goa and for cheaper than in the west, but you may want to have them with you if you don't want to spend your first couple of days shopping.

  • Yoga mat. SWAN Yoga Retreat in Goa do have loan mats that you can use, however it is always nice to have your own.

  • Warm yoga clothes. If you are visiting in December and January it is hot once the sun comes up and you can spend all day on the beach but the mornings can be chilly during practice so its best to have a track suit or something warm.

  • Money. Cash and travelers cheques can be exchanged to rupees, at the reception at SWAN and there are also some ATMs within a 10 to 15 minutes taxi ride. SWAN Yoga Retreat in Goa advices you to have some funds on your arrival, which you can purchase at your airport of departure, however rupees are not to be taken out of India on your return.

  • Beach towel or sarong.  Room towels are provided at SWAN but ask that you do not bring them to the beach.

  • Driving license. If you plan on hiring a car or scooter you will need to have your home country-driving license. It is recommended that you bring your driving license with you if you have one, as here in Goa the best way to move around is to hire a scooter, which will be available for hire at, SWAN, contact reception for that.

  • Torch / flashlight. Power outages are frequent in India so it is recommended that you bring some torches or flashlights with you. In case you don't have one please ask the reception to provide you one which can be used during your stay.

  • Earplugs. If you are sensitive sleeper, it is always recommended.

  • Mosquito repellent. There is a local brand called Odomos available widely. You may want to bring your own with you but this works best.

  • Sunscreen. You will need to take care against the strong sun, especially when arriving from winter.

  • Internet. There is Wi-Fi internet in the campus, ask for the codes at the reception. However, SWAN discourages people to spend a lot of time on the computer.

  • 6. What medicines should I carry?

  • It is recommended that you visit your general physician, personal physician or a travel health clinic 4 to 8 weeks before your departure to India. Recommended vaccinations often include hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus and polio. Goa is not a high-risk area for malaria and the tablets can be considered controversial, it is recommended that you do some research and make your own decision on this.
